Harwood

A creative center for community and the arts.

Harwood Art Center, from 1991

Return to: About Harwood » History » Harwood Art Center, from 1991

From 1991 to 1995, the focus of the Harwood was to begin to build its own community of artists and connect to the neighborhood.  To this end, artist studios and gallery spaces were prepared, and some arts programming was instituted.  In 1995, year-round programming, including an after-school art program and a summer art camp for kids, was established (these two programs continue to this day). In 1997, Harwood was the leader for a community wide event entitled, The Prints of Albuquerque.  This was to set a trend that continues even now - Harwood collaborating on, or leading, city-wide, state-wide and even national arts events. In 1998, Harwood and Plan B (of Santa Fe) co-produced Vehicle: Art and Transportation in NM, in 2000, Harwood produced the Public Art Workshop Series and in 2005, Harwood was the lead organization to produce the 2005 National Poetry Slam.  Exciting plans for future collaborative projects are currently in the works.
