1. The View from Here: Chris Newbill and Lynda Miller
These works originate in the artists' transition from traditional professional careers as educators to lives as full time artists. While the work of each artist examines this transition in different media, the themes and content reflect their years of friendship and collaboration, as well as their complementary explorations of spiritual and emotional growth. Newbill's mixed media collages are rooted in the world of dreams. Miller's colored pencil and ink drawings portray her deep attachment to the natural world and her relationship with it.
2. Encounters: Maggie Robinson
Robinson’s theme for this series is the transition of a backyard pond painted within the cycle of a full year. The series explores the tension between a fixed place and the changeability of both external forces (weather, the seasons) and internal influences (personal moods and perceptions). The dynamics inherent in this tension dialogue with each other, contributing towards an image in time — each painting becomes a conversational framework. Maggie believes both self and place can journey towards an intimacy in which boundaries become porous and the creative experience is revealed as ultimately mysterious.
3. Work by Trevor Lucero
The works in this show are oil paintings on archivally prepared paper mounted to canvas. They were created during an intrepid voyage into the western landscape that lasted 33 days. The paintings were made in plein air style, usually one per day. They depict the contemporary western landscape as a place festooned with color, a magical and fecund space that is simultaneously inviting and repellant.
