The cradles featured here at the Harwood Art Center are selected from a larger installation designed to represent the plight of the estimated 48 million children who have been orphaned by disease and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.
One thousand cradles made from scrap material lying beneath a towering wall of falling sand.
One abandoned warehouse. One inspiring vision. Forty-eight million kids. .
The Cradle Project’s goal is to amass a minimum of 1,000 cradles, all made out of scrap material, to be exhibited in an abandoned warehouse in Albuquerque, NM during the spring of 2008. The underlying belief is that if we can see enough potential in pieces of scrap material to make a structure that cradles a child, then we can also recognize the potential of our world’s millions of forgotten children. All cradles will be available for purchase through an online auction after the installation in 2008. All funds will directly support the efforts of grassroots activists in sub-Saharan Africa.
