The Harwood Young Poets Mentorship Program

The Harwood Young Poets Mentorship program is an exciting new opportunity for emerging poets (ages 15-21) to work with established area poets and community organizers.

The goal of this year-long mentor program is to guide young writers through the processes of becoming a poet and a member of a vibrant art/performance community. In order to achieve these goals, participants will meet twice a month with a variety of poets and organizers to study poetry fundamentals and craft (including a historical overview), poetry performance, polishing the work, booking a venue, publicizing a poetry event, and more. The program will culminate with a public reading of the participants’ best work here at the Harwood Art Center.

If you are a 15-21 year old interested in participating in The Young Poet’s Mentorship program, please contact us to apply. Applicants must commit to participate for the entire year in order to be eligible. Approximately 15 students will be selected for this intensive FREE two-semester program.

Harwood Teen Drawing Intensive:  Get Back to Basics!

We are excited to announce that our Teen Drawing Intensive class is back in action!

This two-semester class is taught in the rich tradition of the apprenticeship system, handed down from generation to generation since the Renaissance. The focus of this class will be on learning a specific philosophy of art, rather than creating finished pieces.

Students will learn the foundations of that most fundamental art skill set, drawing the figure. They will learn to interpret what is in front of them, to build confidence in their ability, and to improve their control. Learning to draw from life teaches many techniques that can be applied to other forms of art making, such as proper measuring, learning to see gradations of light and color, rendering, and mentally framing a composition. Rather than expressing their own vision during class time, teens will learn the language of visual communication to enhance self-expression down the road.

Eighteen students have been selected through an application and interview process, including recommendations from teachers.

Funded in part by the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund.
