Cradle designed by Vincent Leandro
Harwood Main and Front Galleries
October 29 — November 2
Reception: Friday November 2, 5 — 8:30pm
One thousand cradles made from scrap material lying beneath a towering wall of falling sand.
One abandoned warehouse. One inspiring vision. Forty-eight million kids.
This is one event you don’t want to miss!
The cradles featured here are selected from a larger installation designed to represent the plight of the estimated 48 million children who have been orphaned by disease and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. .
The Cradle Project’s goal is to amass a minimum of 1,000 cradles, all made out of scrap material, to be exhibited in an abandoned warehouse in Albuquerque, NM during the spring of 2008. The underlying belief is that if we can see enough potential in pieces of scrap material to make a structure that cradles a child, then we can also recognize the potential of our world’s millions of forgotten children. All cradles will be available for purchase through an online auction after the installation in 2008. All funds will directly support the efforts of grassroots activists in sub-Saharan Africa.
Visit the Harwood to get a taste of the fabulous, creative and inspiring works of artists igniting change around the world!
Artists and community members interested in building a cradle for the spring installation or donating to the project are especially encouraged to attend the preview.
